America’s 250th reminds us on how unique and lasting our Constitution is compared to others. The United States Constitution is the world’s longest lasting constitution at 238 years, and our Declaration of Independence at 250 years. The average constitution of another nation only lasts 20 years. It is common for a nation to go through a dozen constitutions. The Dominican Republic holds the global record of the most constitutions as they have adopted 32 separate constitutions since gaining independence in 1844. We need to appreciate that our Founding Fathers got it right the first time and the American people and our Presidents have been careful stewards of the Constitution. We should be very grateful and build upon this proud legacy.
