This month, Deschutes County, the very heart of Oregon, passed the Oregon 250th Resolution, which celebrates America’s 250th birthday. It honors the birthday by reciting some of our nation’s key milestones. The resolution recognizes 15 historic American Achievements which cover areas such as our Constitution, our victories in WWII and the Cold War, our Bill of Rights, our abolitionist heroes, and our Founding Fathers.
It reminds readers of American facts they may not know, such as that America created the world’s first national park. Based on America’s example, there are now over 6,000 national parks around the world.
The Oregon 250 Resolution is an important way for Oregonians to come together around shared values and common history. When we look back, we realize that many Americans took heroic measures to make our nation better. Upon their shoulders we stand. Upon their work, our rights have been preserved, and our quality of life is better. These essential truths we should not be too quick to ignore.
