In preparation for our Oregon State Fair booth, we have produced this beautiful banner. The banner features our three historical figures we aim to highlight in our nation’s 250th celebration. One is George Washington, who against the odds, defeated the British and won the liberties and freedom for all Americans. The second is Phillis Wheatley, an African American teenage girl who under threats of treason penned beautiful poems for the Revolutionary War and became an internationally-recognized poet. The third figure is Benjamin Franklin, who not only helped form our Constitution (he helped create the House and Senate structure as a great compromise), but he also was an avid slavery abolitionist and inventor as he created the flexible catheter, bifocals, the Franklin stove, the odometer, and the glass harmonica. All three figures are highlighted in the Oregon Resolution to Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday by Recognizing 15 Historic American Achievements.
